Research summary
Although there has been a lot of research to help prevent suicide, there is still not enough known about what the difference is between those who think about suicide, and those who act on these thoughts. Psychologists have tried to explain this by saying there are different factors that mean someone goes from thinking about suicide, to attempting suicide. These theories have been tested, but that has not included asking about people’s own views on their thinking processes. This study aims to find out what people’s experience is to see whether psychological theory is helpful in the real world.
