Research summary
Inflammatory skin diseases account for an enormous physical and psychological burden. Although there have been tremendous improvements in the range of available treatments, there remains a major unmet medical need, not least of all because the majority of the advances are only approved for those with the most severe forms of disease. The purpose of the study is to investigate the immune responses which are involved in driving skin inflammation. We will study immune cells and related cells in the blood and skin of 300 individuals with inflammatory skin diseases, and of 100 individuals without inflammatory skin disease. This will involve taking multiple blood samples and skin samples from individuals over the course of the study (7 years) and analysing the frequency and function of the immune cells and related cells. By understanding the detailed causes of skin inflammation, we anticipate that the results of the study will support finding new approaches to treatment in the future.
