Research summary
Secure units are specialised centres which provide accommodation for vulnerable young people who are likely to abscond or are at risk of harm to themselves or others. Residents of secure units commonly have a background of neglect, abuse, and other traumatic experiences. This leaves young people at high risk of a range of mental health problems, in particular Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Attachment Disorder. Individual resilience is increasingly recognised as an important protective factor against the sequalae of early adversity.
This study aims to explore rates of PTSD and Reactive Attachment disorder and how these are related to trauma exposure and individual resilience in young people resident in Secure Units in Greater Glasgow (Good Shepherd Centre, Kibble Centre, St Mary's Kenmure) with a maximum sample of 60.
The researcher will attend each of these units to explain the research and answer any questions. Young people who consent to take part will then be asked to complete 3 written questionnaires covering: exposure to adverse childhood experiences, symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress disorder, and resilience. Carers will be asked to complete the Relationships Problems Questionnaire which screens for reactive attachment disorder. Afterwards data will be collated to determine the rates of PTSD and reactive attachment disorder in participants and relate these to trauma exposure and resilience.REC name
