Research summary
Barefoot Research and Evaluation (BRE) would like to conduct research into the characteristics and modes of operation of perpetrators of child sexual exploitation (CSE) in the North East of England. We want to do this because with a greater understanding of those who perpetrate CSE, we will be better able to find solutions to sexual violence and exploitation. BRE has recently completed a decade of research across the North East into adult and child sexual exploitation in the region. Subsequently, we now have significant knowledge about victims of exploitation and violence. However, knowledge about perpetrators of CSE is limited which means that little can be done with those who create violence and trauma. Without such understanding and subsequent action, organisations like Arch, that provides services to victims of sexual violence, will be providing their support in perpetuity. There is now support amongst statutory and voluntary sector organisations in the North East involved in criminal justice and victims services, including the police, to find out more about why people sexually exploit others.
