Research summary
We are interested in assessing the changes in sensation in the patients' face, mouth and teeth and their extent that may occur post-surgery. We intend to establish this by testing the nerves on the lower eyelid, cheek, nose and upper lip and also in the mouth and teeth to determine if there has been a change in their ability to detect pressure and stimulation. It will involve a series of basic tests that test the function of the nerves in these areas. We intend to test the nerves at various points both before and after surgery as a means of assessing the impact on and the recovery of the affected nerves. In order to establish whether loss or reduction of nerve function has in any way impacted on patients' quality of life we will provide a questionnaire for patients to complete. The results of these questionnaire will then be cross matched with the results of our nerve tests to determine if there is a correlation between the two.
