Research summary
Shortsightedness is becoming a more important problem in the UK and in other countries, because children now become shortsighted at an earlier age, and as their glasses need to be changed more frequently than they used to, with more children needing stronger glasses in their teenage years.
Much research is being done to find ways to slow down shortsightedness in children and teenagers. However, all research projects only look at the children's prescriptions, and no research asks the children and young people about the effects the shortsightedness has on their quality of life.
There is one questionnaire that has been used before to ask children about the effect of having to wear glasses for any type of eye problem. It asks children about how well they can do their usual activities WITH and WITHOUT glasses. The researchers who have developed that questionnaire are not sure whether it would be a good tool to use in research projects with only short-sighted children and teenagers. In this project, we will ask 100 children up to the age of 12 years, and 100 young people age 13-18 years to anonymously complete the questionnaire - the researchers will not know the children's names or any of their personal details. We will then see whether children who are very shortsighted give different answers to those who are only a little short-sighted, and whether younger children give different answers than the older ones.
This information will then allow researchers to use the questionnaire in future research studies about treatments for short-sightedness.
