Research summary
Aims:
The purpose of this study is to find out if an arts-based intervention, dance and performance, is effective in reducing anxiety and depression in people who have had a stroke and if it improves their quality of life and their sense of mastery of self and body.We will investigate the participant experience of dance and performance in neuro rehabilitation
We will also assess if people who care for those who take part in the intervention (e.g. family members of these people) experience improvements in their own wellbeing and quality of life.
We will also assess how much the intervention costs and whether this represents value for money.
To find out if the intervention is effective, we will compare those who have the intervention with those who do not. We will run the intervention in a community setting and in a hospital setting to see if the intervention works in both places.
To test if the intervention is effective, we need to include comparison groups of people who have had a stroke but who do not have the intervention. Because it is a group intervention, we need to see if people who meet together also report change, despite not having had the intervention. We also need to find out if change would happen anyway, without doing anything. In this study, we will use groups that already exist, rather than randomly allocating people to groups. There will be four groups:
1. People in the community who have the group intervention
2. People in the community who usually meet as a group but who do not have the intervention3. People in hospital who have the group intervention
4. People in hospital who do not have the interventionREC name
