  • Research summary

One in four people with diabetes will develop a foot ulcer. One in five people with a foot ulcer requires an amputation which is devastating for them and their family. It is also costly for the NHS. The numbers of amputations are rising and urgent action is needed to reverse this trend. Most lower limb amputations start with ulcers and can be prevented with early recognition and specialist wound care. One of the most vital aspects of good ulcer care is reducing the pressure on the ulcer when walking or standing. This prevents further skin damage and speeds up ulcer healing.

The aim of this feasibility study is to examine key elements of a future definitive study that will examine if a new smart shoe insole system which monitors foot pressures is able to accelerate the healing process.
