Research summary
This study aims to address what it is like for children and young persons living with a parent or guardian with an acquired brain injury (ABI). It has been well documented that ABI has a detrimental effect on parenting. In spite of this, there is a lack of evidence documenting the experience of what it is like living with a parent with an ABI. This means that the support available is limited, meaning that many children and young adults are living with the difficulties associated with parental ABI without support. It is hoped that the outcomes of this study will give basis for and found the development of an appropriate support programme for children and young persons living with parental ABI.
This study will employ a qualitative narrative method and aims to recruit 10-12 participants from the Devon Partnership National Health Service (NHS) Trust and one third sector organisation (Headway). Criteria for inclusion means that participants will need to be aged between 11-21 and be living with their parent/guardian who has an ABI. In addition, their parent/guardian with an ABI must have been living at home for at least three months’ post injury. Participants will be asked to take part in two individual interviews, approximately a month apart, which will be recorded by dictaphone. Participants will also be asked to take a series of up to 10 photographs using their camera phone or a supplied disposable camera, which will contribute to facilitation of the second interview - an interview guidance sheet will be provided to support participants. The study aims to keep total participant involvement time to 5 hours across a 2 month time period. The site from which participants are recruited will be where interviews are hosted. Data gathered will be transcribed and analysed following evidenced guidance on narrative analysis.REC name
