  • Research summary

Patients who are critically ill and mechanically ventilated are vulnerable to acquiring pneumonia. This is partly due to the patients’ endotracheal tube sitting in the mouth and trachea, alongside reduced usual bodily function, such as swallowing. This leads to plaque build-up and potential pooling of saliva around the endotracheal tube, which may micro leak into the lungs, causing a pneumonia. Pneumonia on ventilator increases a patients risk of mortality, can increase a patient’s hospital stay and risk increase complications during their hospital stay. A way of helping mitigate this instance, is by providing mouthcare to patients.
The Aim of this research study is to look at the effects of using a Structured Mouthcare System on adult patients who are Mechanically Ventilated, within critical care, versus usual standard care. The study will explore effects on pneumonia rates acquired on ventilation for these patients, patients length of hospital stay as well as cost-effectiveness. The study will run within an NHS Foundation trust hosting 3 critical cares with a variety of specialties. The patients in these critical cares, regardless of the study, will receive mouth care in line with standard mouthcare guidance with one area hosting the structured mouthcare system and one area not. Eligible patients (or personal/nominated consultees) will be approached as per good clinical practice and protocol guidance to ask them their opinion for involvement in the study.
