  • Research summary

STOP a registered Charity based in Leeds, UK facilitates weekly sessions on how to manage abusive behaviour in family relationships (STOP, 2008). Phase 1 of a research study entitled ‘Start Treating Others Positively (STOP) firstly, explored the views and experiences of fifteen men and five women who were also parents and attended STOP sessions. The men and women were interviewed and there was clear evidence that they had developed positive life skills whilst attending STOP to enable them to manage their emotions and family relationships. There was also evidence that these positive life skills were being taught to the participants own children and that there are no excuses for abusive behaviour. This work has been published (Steen-Greaves et al, 2009). This led to Phase 2 of the research study and the same participants were asked their views and suggestions as to what they felt and thought would be helpful to include on how to manage relationship conflict in an antenatal parenting education session. This work has also now been published (Steen et al, 2010). The participants involved in Phase 1 and 2 of this research study have assisted in the development of a ‘Becoming and Being a Parent’ workshop. Phase 3 of this study will involve piloting and testing out the newly designed STOP: Becoming and Being a Parent workshop. An impact evaluation questionnaire will collect data from expectant parents at the end of a workshop to measure how they rate individual STOP tools and techniques utilised during the workshop and an overall rating of the workshop. All participants taking part in Phase 3 of the study will be given the option to participate in Phase 4 and can either complete an online questionnaire or can opt for a telephone interview at 6-8 weeks following the birth of their baby.
