The Young People Living with HIV StigmaSurveyUK

Stigma is a social process whereby marginalised and disempowered groups are shamed and isolated because they are defined as unacceptable. Often, those subject to stigma are concerned about being insulted, excluded or harmed and may suffer in silence rather than getting the help that they need. Stigma underpins the imbalance of power that many people with HIV are subjected to in many everyday situations.

This study is a prevalence survey to assess and describe HIV-related stigma experienced by young people aged 15-24 years inclusive in the UK. Participants will be recruited from NHS HIV clinics, HIV community groups in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, through the CHIVA residential camp as well as social media platforms. We aim to collect responses from 500 participants, representing roughly 15% of the estimated number of young people living with HIV within this age group receiving NHS care in the UK. The study will have two main parallel arms; arm 1 will recruit participants in HIV clinics and arm 2 will recruit through HIV community organisations. The survey will be administered online using tablet computers or personal electronic devices. Data will be stored on secure Public Health England servers and analysed by the research team staff. Findings from the survey will be published in the form of a report as well as peer-reviewed journals and communicated by the StigmaSurveyUK as well as disseminated to PLHIV through events organised in partnership with community organisations.

Data from this study will provide information on the burden and types of stigma and discrimination experienced by people living with HIV in the UK and provide specific information on the situations in which stigma and discrimination were experienced to inform interventions to reduce stigma for people living with HIV.
