Research summary
This study is a randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate whether a quality improvement intervention in primary care can improve the prescribing of inhaled corticosteroids to patients with COPD. Inhaled corticosteroids are currently overused in clinical practice but despite clear guidance to reduce their use there are important barriers that prevent primary care from reducing their use.
Practices will be randomized 1:1 to the intervention of control. We will use specialised review of patients data plus feedback to aid practices to switch patients to more appropriate treatments and compare this to standard care. We expect the intervention to reduce the use of inappropriate inhaled treatments while being non-inferior in terms of exacerbations and other outcomes.REC name
