Research summary
Bowel cancer screening uptake remains alarmingly low. A recent study in England found only 52% of test kits were returned and in some regions uptake rates are as low as 25.9%. The aim of this research is to pilot and test a new low-cost behaviour change intervention to increase uptake of screening in the North East of England. A randomised controlled trial will test a) an implementation intentions-based intervention, b) a motivational-based intervention and c) their combination, against d) a control group who receive usual care. If successful, this intervention could be 'rolled out' nationally and at the least, it will have implication for improving delivery of the NHS BCSP in the North East region of England.
