Research summary
Lipomodelling is being used more and more often now to correct deformities following surgery to the breast for both benign and malignant breast disease. During this procedure, fat is taken from a patient by liposuction and is injected into the breast defect of the same patient at the same sitting to try to correct the deformity. Studies have shown that a proportion of the fat injected does not survive and hence patients usually have to undergo more than one operation (sometimes multiple) to achieve the desired cosmetic outcome.
If we can show that the best fat comes from a certain anatomical location on the patient then this area can be targeted for the liposuction and this may improve results and reduce the number of operative procedures required. This has benefits to both the patient and the health service.
