Research summary
The STEEER-AF trial is designed to see if better education for healthcare professionals can improve how patients are treated and how their atrial fibrillation is managed. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart rhythm disorder. AF increases the risk of stroke and also leads to symptoms that can reduce your quality of life. Some of the hospitals/health centres taking part in the trial will receive an education programme for the healthcare professionals that work there, which is a training course for the doctors and nurses on the current international recommendations on the care of AF. Whether the centre receives the extra education will depend on chance - half will be chosen at random to receive additional training. Only after all patients are seen for their initial visit (around 25 patients in each centre) will this random selection take place.
All patients with Atrial Fibrillation referred to a participating centre are being invited to take part in this study.
The patients will not undergo any specific test or treatment. Patients will be asked to complete questionnaire at the beginning of the study, and then 6-9 months after the start of the study. The research team will record any major health issues with the patients during 18 months after the start of the study.
