  • Research summary

Osteoarthritis is a common problem that causes pain and disability. Many people with bad pain related to osteoarthritis have an operation called a total knee replacement. Although many people find that the operation does relieve pain, about one in five experiences moderate to severe pain that continues in the long-term and after the usual recovery time. 75,000 total knee replacement operations are carried out each year in the UK, so this means that around 15,000 people have long-term pain afterwards. It is thought that a combination of approaches that are matched to the individual person are the best way to treat long-term pain. Long-term pain is hard to assess and healthcare staff often don’t know how to help people best, for example where to refer people for specialist help.

Our study will run clinics for assessing patients who have long-term pain in their replaced knee. In an earlier research project we created and refined a care pathway and an assessment process. In this study we will find out how well we can identify patients with long-term pain and test how reliable the assessment process is by seeing how patients are assessed by different healthcare professionals at different time points. We will also assess whether patients with pain after knee replacement find the clinic process to be acceptable to them. This will involve 100 patients completing a questionnaire and 10-20 patients attending two research clinics over a one month period. We will use the findings to finalise the clinic process as good as it can be so that we can test it out in a future trial.
