  • Research summary

Orthodontics or ‘braces’ is an established treatment to fix the position of the teeth and the way they bite together, whileimproving the way they look and it is commonly undertaken in young people. Over 40% of teenagers in the UK need
braces and currently almost a third of children have braces, at a cost to the NHS in England of £273 million each year. Most of the research about brace treatment however does not consider what patients truly feel about or want from treatment. As a result, we do not know which factors are important to orthodontic patients and this may affect the decision-making process when considering having treatment.
This study aims to address this problem, using interviews and surveys, to develop a list of the key results that patients, parents and clinicians want from brace treatment. This is called a Core Outcome Set and I aim to develop this using a
well recognised method with patients central to the project.
The first part of the study will involve updating existing information on what is currently being looked at in research of brace treatment. I will then seek the opinions and views of patients and parents though group discussions and one-to one
interviews on what factors are important to them and what they are hoping to gain out of brace treatment. At the final stage of the study, the views of both orthodontists and patients will be merged though open discussion into a small set of key factors and results, which have been identified as being essential to both parties. This will occur through a process known as Delphi.
The Core Outcome Set that results from this study will be used to ensure that:
    • future discussions between patients/parents and orthodontists about treatment include aspects important to patients
    • future research projects investigate the results of treatment that matter to patients/parents
