Research summary
The aim of this research is to use utilise a qualitative approach to examine patient and provider acceptability of telehealth in the delivery of COPD and Type 2 Diabetes care.
Telehealth; the use of electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support health care and communication between patient and professional, is consistent with the Welsh Assembly Government agenda of prudent healthcare. However, for telehealth to achieve its potential in encouraging autonomous behaviour and self-management amongst patients, both patients and health professionals must be accepting of information technologies as part of service provision. Previous findings demonstrate that failure to consider stakeholder attitudes towards technology in healthcare can lead to less than optimal outcomes. This research forms a component of 2 larger randomised controlled trials being conducted by Hywel Dda University Health Board. The research comprises of two studies involving a) patients and b) medical professionals.
Participants will therefore be a sample of:
a) 8-10 patients from each RCT (Diabetes and COPD) will participate in an individual semi-structured interview where they will be asked to discuss their experiences of using the telehealth system, what their expectations of the system had been, their engagement with technology, barriers and facilitators of use as well as how telehealth had contributed to their disease management.b) Two focus groups for each RCT will be conducted (comprising of 4-8 participants representing varied roles of a multidisciplinary team)to explore professional acceptability of technology, how service delivery had changed with telehealth implementation and to what end, barriers and facilitators to delivery, as well as heir their perceptions of the future of service delivery.
