  • Research summary

Research suggests there have been a number of challenges to employing peer support workers (PSWs) within mental health teams. These have included teams or non-peer staff being less accepting or understanding of people who use mental health services, or seeing PSWs as beneath non-peer staff. These challenges suggest that staff views of PSWs may play a key role in the success of PSWs joining teams, yet to our knowledge there has been no research exploring this. Personal Construct Theory (Kelly, 1955) describes how people make sense of the world around them through their own personally created or constructed views, for example “my friend is good” is a constructed view. These views may have been influenced by past experiences and will often impact future views of things including people. These views can be challenged and changed over time as someone gathers more information. We aren’t always aware of these views, thus Kelly created a way of looking into both the views we are aware of and the one’s we aren’t called ‘repertory grid’. Using this, this research will be able to look into how staff view PSWs compared to themselves and other staff, and potentially show how PSWs impact staff teams.
