  • Data collection arrangements

We aim to create a database of infants and young children ranging from two-month-old infants to ten-year-old children. We will initially ask families participating in studies at local nurseries and the testing center at the Edinburgh Zoo if they would like to sign up to be notified about future study possibilities. We will create an updated and informative website that lets parents know what we are currently studying and how they can be involved.

    We will collect:
1.Demographic information including parent(s)’ & child(ren)’s name, child(ren)’s birthdate and sex, address, phone number, and email address
2.Information about languages spoken/heard at home
3.Information about when the child was born relative to his/her due date and whether there are any known developmental delays
4.After a child participates in a study, we will record the date of their participation and the name of the study in which they participated, but no experimental data (e.g., videos or questionnaire data) will be associated with the file in the database

  • Research programme

This database will be used by developmental researchers within the School of Psychology & Neuroscience at the University of St Andrews. We are interested in discovering how infants and young children learn about and engage in the physical and social world. Some of our tasks involve problem solving or tool-use and others are more social in nature. When we contact parents for a particular study, we will tell them what the study will involve and how long it will take. These studies involve short games, videos or other activities that will help us better understand how infants and children develop.
