Research summary
Squint, Posture and Balance: A Survey to see if they are linked
Vision works closely with other body systems to control posture and balance. An incomitant squint is a particular type of squint where double vision occurs when looking in certain directions because at least one of the muscles in the eye is not working properly. There is some evidence to suggest that people with incomitant squint may be more prone to problems associated with posture or balance because of their squint. However, we don't know whether this affects people in every day life or whether the body is able to compensate for this in other ways. Therefore, this survey is designed to try to find out whether people with an incomitant squint experience any problems with balance or posture or not.
The study will invite people with an incomitant squint who attend either the orthoptic department at the RVI or their local optometry practice to complete a questionnaire, which should take no more than 5 mins to fill in. No personal data is needed on the form, so responses will be anonymous.
The information will be used to give researchers an indication as to whether people with squint experience problems associated with balance and posture or not. Although there will be no immediate benefit to participants of this study, if any consistent problems are highlighted, this research could provide clinicians with a better understanding of whether / how a squint affects people, and may inform future research into this under-studied area.
