Research summary
This is a pilot study looking at quality of sleep in children and young people (age 12-18) with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). It is known that adolescents have higher rates of sleep disturbance, and that sleep disturbance has metabolic effects including blood glucose levels. It is also known that diabetes can disrupt sleep. This is a survey-based study using standard sleep questionnaires. It will be distributed in paediatric and transition diabetes clinics. It will also look at parent/guardian sleep quality. The study is based in Scotland although it is envisaged that other sites including in England will agree to take part. This pilot study will inform future research into sleep quality and architecture of adolescents with T1DM.
