Research summary
There are increasing health and social care needs of an ageing population which arises in part from the presence of multiple chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart and lung disease and cancer. Another very important chronic condition has now been recognised and this is frailty which is emerging as a public health priority. Very few major clinical treatment studies have been conducted to assist health and social care professions to plan the most effective treatment for frailty and its related condition, sarcopaenia (age-related loss of muscle tissue). The SPRINTT project is major EU-funded study involving 9 European countries that will examine the benefits of in a clinical trial of using multiple treatments such as exercise and nutrition given for 2 years to improve the health status of older people with frailty and sarcopaenia.
