  • Research summary

Many people suffer daily from heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux. These symptoms can cause discomfort, lead to changes in lifestyle and often require long term medication. In rare cases, these symptoms can even lead to other health problems, including cancer.

However, there is little information about how people feel living with these symptoms.

This study aims to learn more about people’s understanding and experiences of these symptoms and how they impact people’s lives.

We will invite around 6,000 people in the Heartburn Health programme to complete three online surveys over one year.

Heartburn Health is a research programme which aims to speed up research into solutions for heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux. It will bring together volunteers across the UK with reflux who are willing to share their health data and take part in reflux-related studies. Studies may evaluate new tests or treatment for heartburn and related health problems.

The surveys will ask questions about reflux symptoms, impact on daily life, anxiety and understanding of the condition. Together, the three surveys will help us understand how reflux and wellbeing changes over time. We will also be able to see whether any of the tests or treatment being studied through Heartburn Health have an impact on wellbeing.
