Research summary
High blood pressure is associated with an elevated risk of vascular disease and treatment resistant hypertension (blood pressure that is uncontrolled despite adequate doses of three or more agents, including a diuretic) particularly so. There is, however, substantial uncertainty about the prevalence of treatment resistant hypertension because of challenges associated with blood pressure measurement, the exclusion of secondary causes and the confirmation of actual adherence to therapy. This results in significant uncertainty about the need for new therapeutic interventions and the capacity to identify patient populations upon which novel interventions can be evaluated. The goal of this project is to determine the numbers of individuals with treatment resistant hypertension managed at about 100 specialist centres around the world, define the characteristics of these patients and attempt to make estimates of disease frequency. The study will be a retrospective review of
medical record data, based upon de‐identified information and will require no patient contact.REC name
