Research summary
Obesity is a global public health issue that is linked with multiple diseases affecting the body such as the heart, lungs, digestion and metabolism. There are many factors to weight gain that can lead to overweight or obesity. One of them is when more calories (energy for the body from food and drink) are taken in than being used. Even when weight loss is achieved, weight regain can occur over time, making weight loss maintenance challenging. Thus, there is a need to find nutritional solutions that help keep the weight loss.
The study product that is being tested in this study is a blend of three ingredients: L-carnitine tartrate (Carnipure tartrate®), yeast protein hydrolysate (DNF-10®), dihydrocapsiate (CapsiAtra®). Each ingredient has been studied on its own and seems to help reduce how much we eat or increase how much energy our bodies use. These ingredients can be found in food supplements which are available without prescription.
This study is to investigate the effect of the study product on energy intake and energy expenditure in overweight or obese people, and their safety to use, compared to placebo treatment. By testing the effect of the blend on energy intake and expenditure (collectively called ‘energy balance’) in the body, this study aims to better understand whether the ingredients will improve weight loss maintenance.
44 participants will be recruited to this single-site study. Study participants will attend clinic at the study site 4 times in total as well as complete a validated online questionnaire called Intake24 about foods they've eaten between the in-person study visits.
