Research summary
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a condition associated with low levels of physical activity and sedentary behaviour (i.e. too much sitting). In addition there is a higher level of heart disease and diabetes in those with COPD. This significantly contributes to the burden of morbidity and mortality of the disease. The study will be measuring this sitting time using a specific waist-worn monitoring device for 1 week and examining cardiovascular risk markers, diabetes risk markers and body composition (i.e. fat and muscle mass) measures in relation to it. These variables will also be measured in those of a similar age without the condition to allow comparisons to be made. To examine the effect of sedentary behaviour on heart disease and diabetes risk factor development these variables will be measured at follow-up assessments at 6 months and 1 year.
