Research summary
The Southampton Women’s Survey (SWS) is a cohort study of mothers and their children. We aim to examine early life and developmental predictors of health and wellbeing, and preparation for parenthood during the transition from adolescence to adulthood. We aim to contact the women in the SWS who have children and ask them to pass the details of the questionnaire to their son or daughter. We will do this when the SWS offspring are aged 17-19 years old. The information we receive will be linked to the data from earlier waves of the SWS, during which we collected considerable information on the mothers and their children. We aim to identify the factors, from preconception onwards that make young people less likely to adopt unhealthy behaviours during adolescence and are, as a result, associated with more optimal health and wellbeing in the transition to adulthood. Ultimately we aim to identify factors from preconception onwards which we could intervene to improve so that adolescent health is optimised.
