Research summary
In 2020, patients with suspected fatty liver disease were referred by their GP to the Southampton CCG community liver clinic pilot care pathway for a liver scan. Patients referred to this service received a liver scan and were provided with lifestyle advice (e.g. exercise regularly, maintain a health body weight and limit alcohol consumption) to help improve their liver health.
The current NICE guidelines for patients who have a fatty liver is to rescan every three years. However, 12 months after their initial liver scan, we would like to invite patients for a follow up liver scan so that we can objectively measure how lifestyle modifications have slowed down, halted and in some cases reversed the progression of liver disease.
It should be noted that this follow up liver scan is for research purposes only and will not impact on the patients normal 3 yearly scan pathway.
Additionally, a repeat liver scan would, we believe, also provide additional motivation to patients to sustain their lifestyle modifications in the longer term.
