  • Research summary

    Despite initiatives to increase the uptake of psychological therapy for Black and Minority Ethnic communities, access to therapy remains poor in South Asian communities. Despite some of the barriers faced by South Asian women there are a number of those who continue to access psychological therapy in both primary and secondary care services, yet there is very limited research exploring what makes psychological therapy accessible for this population group. Furthermore little is known about what enables South Asian Women to engage in therapy.

    The aim of the project is to therefore;

    1. Explore South Asian Women’s experience of accessing and receiving psychological therapy in a primary care setting, where an IAPT (Increasing Access to Psychological Therapies)model is used.

    An exploration of what makes services accessible for South Asian Women, can further develop our understanding of how IAPT services can be further adapted and evolved to continue increasing access to services and to maintain engagement for hard to reach groups.

    To do this, a qualitative study will be carried out. The study will be carried out across sites that offer therapy using an IAPT model. Participants who meet the inclusion criteria (female, aged 18+, be of an Indian, Pakistani or Bengali ethnic background and have accessed therapy through an IAPT service) will be invited to take part. Once consent has been sought, they will be expected to complete an in-depth interview lasting up to minutes to explore their experiences of accessing psychological therapy. No follow up will be required, and participants will not receive an monetary payments for participating.

    All interviews will be audio recorded and an interpreter will be provided if necessary.
