Research summary
This project seeks to collect and store muscle samples (psoas muscle) that are usually discarded from donor kidneys during preparation for transplant. These stored muscle samples will provide an important resource for future research into skeletal muscle studies, helping to understand how skeletal muscle changes at different stages of life.
Kidney transplant recipients will be asked for their consent for using these discarded samples, but no study procedures will be applied to transplant recipients. No changes to the preparation of donor kidneys are envisaged; these muscle samples are currently removed by the surgical team during preparation of the donor kidney for
transplant. The transplant surgical team at the Freeman will remove the muscle samples from the donor kidney as part of usual clinical care. These samples will then be collected by the research nurse team, frozen and transferred for storage in the Newcastle Biobank. Information that accompanies the donor organ will be stored on a RedCAP database held by Newcastle Hospitals, along with a unique project ID for each sample.
