  • Research summary

This research study evaluates the effectiveness of the Solihull Approach parenting group ‘Understanding your child’s behaviour’, comparing the treatment group with a control group in Solihull, England and in Wales. A previous published study has evaluated the effectiveness without a control group, using questionnaires before and after the group in Solihull. A recent study, submitted for publication, used questionnaires at 3 points, before, after and at follow up at 2 locations in the West Midlands, in Solihull and Walsall. For this study, the difference is that there is a control group and the study is proposed to run in England and in Wales. All parents joining a Solihull Approach parenting group in Solihull, England and in Wales will be asked to complete a booklet of 3 short questionnaires before they start the group and upon completion of the group. The groups run termly over 10 weeks, so parents asking to join once the groups have started will provide a waiting list control group over 10 weeks. The parents in the control group will complete the same booklet of questionnaires at week 1 and week 10. They will then join a group in the next term, so their wait will not be affected by the study; they would have had to wait anyway for the next term’s groups to start. The booklet of 3 short questionnaires has been used in the recent study and is now used routinely in Solihull.
