Research summary
The aim is to repeat the survey of prisoner's oral health that was last conducted in 2011 (ethical approval number:10/S0501/10)
The proposed study is a cross-sectional survey to assess the current oral health status and psychosocial needs of Scotland’s prison population within eleven prison facilities (adult male, adult female and young offenders institutions). All prisoners in the selected institutions will be eligible for inclusion. It is known that the oral health of prisoners in Scotland is poor due to health and oral health practices which are detrimental. The need to know the current oral health status of prisoners and young offenders, and to appreciate their oral health concerns and psychosocial needs is a means of providing appropriate and acceptable treatment and oral health promotion for this client group. Quantitative oral health survey will obtain the baseline data of the prisoner's oral health and psychosocial status since the NHS started providing oral health care in 2011. This data will provide a preliminary step to developing appropriate and acceptable health interventions to deliver treatment and promote oral health and the means by which they may be evaluated.
The study will consist of an oral health examination and a questionnaire, and the maximum time any participants will be in the study will be 1 hour.REC name
