Research summary
The following project aims to investigate the underlying differences in the thinking patterns between women with long-standing difficulties managing their emotions and relationships, commonly known as the diagnosis of Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD), compared to women with an established diagnosis of Autism. This is thought to be of importance because the similar presentation between these two groups contributes to Autism in women being misdiagnosed, which has an impact on people’s access to appropriate services and interventions. Therefore, this study would aim to better understand and distinguish between psychological profiles specific to each presentation. To do this, we will ask women with diagnoses of EUPD or Autism, as well as people from the general population, to complete a number of questionnaires that have been devised to look at the underlying traits and thinking styles thought to be common to each diagnosis. This will allow us to understand which traits overlap, and which traits are unique to either diagnosis. In investigating this, we hope that we will be able to distinguish between these two profiles more readily, which in the long term might help to improve people’s access to services that are most suited to their needs.
