  • Research summary

A local survey of understand smoking behaviours to inform smoking services in Hampshire
Smoking continues to be a major health issue, contributing to serious illnesses and health inequalities. In Hampshire, we want to better understand people who currently smoke, why they smoke, and what might help them quit — especially in communities where smoking-related health problems are more common.
To do this, Hampshire County Council is running a survey for people who currently smoke and used to smoke, aged 16 and over. The survey will ask about smoking habits, attitudes, and experiences with quitting. It will also explore use of newer products like vapes and nicotine pouches, which are becoming more popular.
The survey will be sent out by GP surgeries to patients who have agreed to receive messages by email or text. At the end of the survey, they will be signposted to a link to sign up for stop smoking support if they’re interested.
The information collected will help the Public Health team at the Council decide how to spend a government grant aimed at improving stop smoking services. It will also guide future decisions about where and how to offer support—especially in areas where smoking is more common and people may not usually access help.
The survey will run in two phases: a pilot in the summer of 2026, followed by a larger rollout across September and October 2026. All responses will be kept confidential and used only to improve public health services.
