Research summary
Digital technology includes the use of smartphone-based applications which are increasingly being used across a range of health conditions. This study will test willing participants with a range of parkinsonian conditions who are already attending the neurology outpatient clinic at the Oxford John Radcliffe Hospital, using a 10 minute smartphone test of voice, balance and movement. Results will be compared to previous recordings in control participants obtained from the Oxford Discovery Cohort.
This study will investigate whether digital technology can be used to tell apart Parkinson's disease from its mimics from here on referred to as the alternative parkinsonian syndromes (APS). These conditions all have different disease trajectories and medication benefit, with at best a 90% accuracy of clinical diagnosis even in expert hands. Being unable to understand how these conditions differ may help to improve clinical management of the Parkinsonian disorders and aid patient selection for future clinical trials.
