  • Research summary

Cardiac causes of palpitations “racing heart beats” and presyncope “dizziness” are a considerable cause of distress to patients. Reaching the correct diagnosis relies on taking an electrical recording of the heart while the patient is experiencing these symptoms. Current methods of monitoring often do not lead to a diagnosis, particularly in patients with very sporadic symptoms. An innovative Smartphone-based device(AliveCor ECG)allows the patient to take an electrical recording of their heart at the time of their symptoms by holding the device in their hands. The recording is then electronically transmitted to a specialist for interpretation. There are early reports that the AliveCor provides an accurate recording of the heart rhythm but it is yet to be properly validated in comparison to current methods. We intend to give patients an AliveCor smartphone-based device in addition to traditional monitoring. The recordings from each source can then be compared to see if the AliveCor is a reliable method of recording a patients heart rhythm. If it proves to be reliable, it may lead on to a larger trial and expanded use. Swindon Hospital patients referred for heart monitoring will be eligible for inclusion in the study.

The potential benefits for the patient are rapid diagnosis and some control over their own condition with reassurance that either their symptoms are benign therefore no cause for worry or that a specific treatment to alleviate their symptoms is needed. The system itself is easy to use and the patient centred approach makes it an ideal adjunct to current investigations. Resources, funding and the devices themselves will be provided by Great Western Hospital, Swindon.
