  • Research summary

This study involves conducting follow up interviews with people who have taken part in the Salford Lung Studies (SLS), two 12-month studies of treatments in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. The SLS studies are being conducted in Salford as a collaboration between North West eHealth (NWeH), part of Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, the University of Manchester, GPs and community pharmacists in Salford, and are sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline Research and Development Ltd (GSK).
Interviews will be conducted with people shortly after they finish the SLS studies. The data collected in these interviews will build on information gathered in the main Salford Lung Studies. They will provide a greater understanding of people’s experiences during the studies, how they manage their condition day to day, their views and opinions on the treatment they receive, and how these might have changed over the course of the studies.
Two types of follow up interviews will be conducted in this study: a short interview (closed questions) and an extended interview (closed and open questions) either by telephone or face to face.
Not all SLS participants will be interviewed for this study; 400 patients from the asthma SLS and 400 from the COPD SLS will be invited to participate in the short interview, with a subsample of 40 from each for the extended interview.
During the interviews, each patient will be asked brief questions about their COPD or asthma as appropriate, how it affects their daily life, their opinions about the treatments they take, and their experiences of these during the Salford Lung Study. There are no direct benefits for the patient from taking part in this study, but it is anticipated that the information they provide will aid understanding of people’s experiences of COPD and asthma and their treatment.
