Research summary
Sleep plays an important role in health and is strongly related to many diseases including Diabetes. People with sleep disorders such as insomnia often underestimate their sleep quality while healthy volunteers tend to overestimate their sleep quality. We want to compare data from sleep diaries with objective sleep measurements from accelerometers (a device that look like a wrist watch which measures participants’ activity level) and polysomnography (involves overnight stay in a sleep laboratory where measurements of brain activity, blood oxygen level and body movements are taken). We also want to assess the impact of polysomnography.
Inclusion criteria:
1. No known circadian rhythm disorders
2. Aged 18-60 years
3. Able to provide informed consent
4. Fluent in English (due to the involvement of questionnaire assessments)This study involves filling out a paper sleep diary and wear an accelerometer for two weeks. We will explain to participants how to record in the diary. Accelerometer will measure their movement 24 hours/day. On one of the days within these two weeks (not including the first day), we will ask participants to collect a saliva sample upon awakening. We will show participants how to obtain the sample. Finally, we will ask participants to spend a night in our sleep laboratory. We will connect a few devices up to them while they sleep which provide various sleep measurements. We will also take 25 hair samples, three skin swabs, collect over-night urine samples and another morning saliva sample after their overnight stay in the sleep laboratory. Two weeks after polysomnography, we will collect another three skin swabs.
Taking part in this study is entirely voluntary. Participants should only take part if they are happy to do so. Participants will be given at least 24 hours to consider the participant information sheet and discuss with family and friends.
