  • Research summary

The South West Elective Orthopaedic Centre (EOC) was established in 2004. It performs purely elective orthopaedic surgery and specialises in hip and knee arthroplasty surgery. The centre performed over 5,260 procedures including 3,249 arthroplasty operations over a period of one year (2016/2017), the most by any elective orthopaedic centre in the UK.
Currently, there is a paucity of published papers which have reported on sleep disturbance that commonly occurs post total knee arthroplasty. Most studies have shown results in a small number of patients. With this limited literature it is difficult for surgeon to tell patient when they could expect sleep disturbance to resolve precisely. This is an area therefore, that requires further study, in large number of patients showing statistical significance. For the purpose of this study we need to start assessing sleep disturbance prior to procedure and evaluate how long it takes for this to resolve completely post-surgery.

The aim of this clinical study is to assess the duration it takes for sleep disturbance to resolve following Total Knee Arthroplasty. We will using two questionnaires for this study. First, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality index score, which is well validated questionnaire. Second was developed locally to attain further valuable information to exclude any potential bias. These will be obtained from patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty and are wiling to take part in study after appropriate consenting. These will collected before and at regular intervals after the operation, until the scores reach a predetermined normal score and plateau.
