Research summary
We currently look after 1400 patients on Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. Arriving at the decision for need of treatment, is a time consuming pathway that often results in a number of waiting list breaches. Each time this happens, a fine is issued to Respiratory Physiology, if the diagnostic study has not been carried out within the recommended 18week waiting list. The aim of this study is to determine changes that can be implemented to improve this pathway and ultimately continue to deliver efficient care to our patients. The NHS constitution includes statements that suggest patients should have access to such services not just through secondary care. This study will hopefully highlight this as a possibility. In addition to this I will also be looking at the prevelance of commonly published risk factors with potential Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) patients. A third aim of the study will be to raise awareness of OSA within the general public. With a prevelance not far off conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, knowledge of the condition is sparse. It is important the severe implications that untreated OSA has on an individual's health are highlighted, and this study aims to improve this.
