  • Research summary

We know that people with kidney disease have sleep problems and often feel fatigued. One of the most common sleep problems which could cause fatigue is sleep apnoea. Most sleep apnoea in people with kidney disease is obstructive, this is where there is a partial or complete collapse of the airway during sleep. If this happens regularly it can cause excessive daytime sleepiness, which impairs quality of life, and may increase the chances of having heart problems. However, lots of people with kidney disease do not know they have sleep apnoea, so before treatment is able to be offered it is important that we identify those individuals who are at high risk. One questionnaire that can detect whether people have sleep apnoea is the STOP-Bang questionnaire. This is a short questionnaire which can tell us the chances of you having sleep apnoea. If there is a high chance that people have sleep apnoea based on the STOP-Bang questionnaire then we will ask some people to wear a device at home whilst asleep which will tell us with more certainty whether people have sleep apnoea. We will then compare the results of the STOP-Bang questionnaire with the results from the device.
