  • Research summary

This study will determine whether the presence of a ’Sky Ceiling’ improves patient experience during MRI scanning using established self-report measures of anxiety, pain and stress, while also assessing whether the Sky Ceiling improves the ability to produce diagnostic quality MRI images in a time-efficient manner. A Sky Ceiling is a large television screen integrated into the ceiling of an MRI room and displays imagery of blue sky with trees and has already been donated by industry and installed at one of the two locations at which this study will be conducted (Furness General Hospital, Royal Lancaster Infirmary). One site is the intervention arm and the other the control. The potential beneficiaries of this study includes all patients that require an MRI scan, as well as the health services and Radiology departments that would benefit from a more efficient throughput. A total of 858 patients will be recruited over a period of approximately 3 months. All patients will have been referred by a medical practitioner from either primary or secondary care and capacity to consent will be assessed following standard MRI protocol. Patient care will not be affected by the proposed study.\n
