Research summary
We have developed, and undertaken initial testing of an intervention that aims to help pregnant women to stop smoking. The intervention comprises text messages using evidence based behaviour change techniques (BCTs) embedded in an engaging story with pictures. In previous studies we refined the intervention and extended it so that it now runs between early pregnancy and 6 weeks post birth, and tested it for acceptability to the target group. A randomised controlled trial will be required to find out if the intervention works to help pregnant women to stop smoking. However first a feasibility and pilot trial involving two health boards and 70 pregnant women is needed to test the best methods for recruiting pregnant smokers to the study, study methods and materials, and to assess the likely impact of the intervention in a future large scale trial.
