  • Research summary

We have developed, and undertaken initial testing of an intervention that aims to help pregnant women to stop smoking. The intervention comprises text messages using evidence based behaviour change techniques (BCTs)embedded in an engaging story with pictures. The intervention currently is designed to run between early pregnancy and birth. A randomised controlled trial will be required to find out if the intervention works to help pregnant women to stop smoking, but it first needs to be extended to 6 weeks post birth to help prevent relapse, and assessed for acceptability. We plan to use focus groups with women who smoke or have smoked during pregnancy to asses if the intervention is acceptable, understandable and engaging and to make any alterations and improvements before further testing in a trial.
