Skin barrier function and skin vulnerability

  • Research type

    Research Study

  • Full title

A study to examine the feasibility of the characterization of the skin barrier function of adult patients in primary and secondary clinical settings with vulnerable skin, due to blanching and non-blanching erythema and, or, incontinence associated dermatitis, who are at risk of the development of pressure ulceration

  • Research summary

Vulnerable skin is thought to increase the risk of patients developing pressure sores. This is a preliminary study to investigate vulnerable skin sites such as the areas at risk of developing pressure sores and areas of the skin which are affected by incontinence or exposed to urine or faeces. Skin vulnerability (or integrity) will be measured in two ways: trans-epidermal water loss (water loss within the skin layers) and skin hydration (skin moisture). This initial study will obtain information on the feasibility of the project (i.e. issues with measurement, patient recruitment and data collection/analysis etc.) in care settings, aiding further research.
