Research summary
When patient suffer injury to a limb through a fracture, their muscles atrophy or get smaller due to lack of activity. This atrophy makes their recovery more difficult and longer, which is particularly acute in people who do not have great muscle mass due to age.
This study looks at the basic structural and molecular changes of muscle in response to trauma, which may aid the targeted development of novel therapies.
When patent undergoes surgery, we will take 3 samples of tissue of the area being operated upon about the size of a pea. This tissue would be removed in order to fix the fracture in any event. The patient details will not be passed to the research team, but certain data such as age, sex and nature of injury will be given, but from this it will not be possible to identify the patient. This tissue will be microscopically analysed and a novel therapeutic compound Muscle Ring Finger 1 (MuRF1) inhibitor which improve muscle regeneration will be tested in the laboratory.
