Research summary
This is an exploratory randomised controlled trial (RCT) of high-frequency airway oscillation (HFAO) in breathless patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We propose to study the clinical benefits of the Aerosure device for patients with COPD using commonly employed patient reported outcome measures. Patients will be randomly allocated either a 6 week training period using the device or a six week period under sham and best usual care conditions. We hypothesise that COPD patients training with a HFAO device for 6 weeks will have greater reductions in breathlessness and improved health-related quality of life (dyspnoea component) than those following best usual care.
