Research summary
Dementia is an incurable illness, and people with Dementia (PwD) can benefit from a palliative approach to their care. PwD and their families usually prefer to be cared for at home until death, where possible. Palliative care has been identified internationally as a priority in dementia care.
The Model for Dementia Palliative Care project is currently underway to develop an acceptable, evidence- and practise-based model for palliative care for people living with dementia in the community.
This ongoing project is carried out in a number of stages. To date, a scoping review and a survey have been conducted to inform researchers of the available evidence and existing services (Phase 1; ethical approval granted by Clinical Research Ethics Committee, Cork).
The next step of this project (Phase 2) is to conduct site visits of existing “model” services across the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and England. During the site visits we will interview a number of staff members through semi-structured interviews/focus groups, to learn about the service. We will also distribute questionnaires to staff members which will explore their experience with the service. We will also collect observational data whilst we are visiting the sites i.e. how many beds/rooms, any dementia friendly surroundings, therapy rooms, possibly sitting in on multidisciplinary team meetings with permission from the head of service, etc.
Where a site has existing routinely collected data, we will ask the head of service to share some of this (anonymised) data with us such as demographics of service users, types of dementia etc. During the site visits we will also ask the service providers to distribute an anonymous questionnaire to approximately 10-30 service users on our behalf, as well as general advertisement via a study poster, to get an idea of service users' satisfaction with the service.REC name
